The course

What is FREC 4?

A nationally recognised pre-hospital qualification for people progressing in NHS or private ambulance services – emergency care assistants, intermediate ambulance practitioners, event medics, associate practitioners and healthcare assistants – and specialist military, police and fire roles.

It meets the PHEM skills framework competencies at descriptor level E.

Eligibility

Entry requirements

You must be 18 or over on day one and hold FREC 3, or meet a prior learning category:

  • Level 4 (Extended) Certificate for First Person on Scene
  • Level 3 Diploma in Ambulance Emergency & Urgent Care Support
  • NHS ECA or ECSW with 12 months' experience
  • Army CMT 1, RAF Medic or Royal Navy/Marine Medical Assistant

What's covered

A wider scope of practice for pre-hospital emergencies, including:

  • Patient assessment, observations and ECG monitoring
  • Airway management including supraglottic airways
  • Thoracic trauma, kinetics, triage and immobilisation
  • Sepsis, respiratory, maternity and the sick or injured child
  • Major incidents and mental health crisis

Do I need FREC 3 first?
Usually. Alternatively you can meet one of the listed prior learning categories, such as NHS ECA/ECSW with 12 months' experience or an Army CMT 1, RAF or Royal Navy/Marine medic.
Does FREC 4 expire?
It remains valid as long as you keep CPD records and complete a yearly ILS update.
Is there pre-course work?
Yes – please work through the FREC 4 pre-learning before the course starts.
Can you run a course for our organisation?
